Serve your favourite sake in MASU like they do in a traditional izakaya Masu is a square wooden sake cup. Before it took up its role as a sake vessel, masu cups were used to measure rice portions in Japan. As a means of measurement, the traditional sizes of masu boxes were regulated some 500 years ago and have not changed since. Today, as a sake serving vessel, you will normal find the masu box in 1 gō 一合枡 (equivalent to 180ml). As the saying goes in Japan “Masu Masu”, literally meaning “More and more”- More and more sake, more and more happiness and luck. With this association with good fortune, masu is usually used to serve sake at special occasions and celebrations. To serve sake with masu, a glass is placed inside the masu cup, over which the server will pour sake until it overflows into the masu like a waterfall. The overflowing of sake is a symbol of kindness and generosity to your guests.
Isn’t that exactly how you would like your guests to feel?
